My last 9-5 job in media, and dinosaurs going extinct
Notes on digital media's next body and possibly final form
I’ve gone independent after a nice 2.5 years at Inverse1. We did a lot while there, and with a scrappy team. I enjoyed my time there. This time around, unlike my days at The Washington Post where long tenures were the norm, I sensed what was happening earlier. When I accepted the job, I asked my soon-to-be boss if he could guarantee I wouldn’t be laid off eventually. More on that below.
First, I’ll go over how Inverse works, how it may just yet survive us all, and then I’ll explain why I’m no longer with the firm. I got exactly one negative comment stating I wouldn’t have been kicked if I was doing great work, but after I responded, the guy backed off and apologized. Because sometimes you do get kicked for doing great work. Especially in this ever-evolving (devolving?) space.2
